Interesting facts about the Wutachschlucht
The Wutach originates as Seebach at the Feldberg mountain and was originally brook of the Danube.
Today she is a tributary of the Rhine. The Wutach begins approximately 3km east of Lenzkirch after the
union of the rivers Gutach and the Haslach which flows through Lenzkich. The Wutach dug a up to 200 meter
deep canyon into the earth's crust. An astonishing animal - and plant-variety can be found in the Wutachschlucht.
Here grow 1200 ferns and flowers, and 1400 kinds of bugs and 590 kinds of butterflies are native here. The
Wutachschlucht is a nature reservation since 1939.
The hike
Our hike leads us through the middle Wutachschlucht, probably the most interesting part of the Wutach.
The hike is 15km long and lasts approximately 5 hours. Since parts of the way can be slippery also in
summer, good hiking shoes are recommended.
How to get there
From Lenzkirch, you take the car or the public bus to direction Bonndorf. After 10 km you start shortly after
the Village Gündelwangen at the parking place Lotenbachklamm (bus stop "Gündelwangen, Abzweigung
Schattenmühle") directly at the junction to the Schattenmühle.
Way-description
Cross the street and walk down the steep Lotenbachklamm in approximately 30 minutes to the Schattenmühle.
Stick directly to the stream Lotenbach. When you arrive at the Wutach, cross the Wutach and follow the river
downwards until the Wutachmühle. The footpath is marked well, so a hiking map should not be necessary.
Return trip
From the Wutachmühle, you can drive back by bus via Bonndorf to the starting point.
